Hi everyone!

I just thought I would extend the invite to all my readers who are interested in the latest camera gear from Sony (Alpha and NEX cameras) to subscribe to my YouTube channel. Basically this channel is me reviewing new gear and giving tutorials on how to use Alpha and NEX products as well as talking about photography in general. I'm open to suggestions on tutorials and requests for lenses and other accessories for review. This is a fairly new channel and videos will only get better so check it out.

{Self-Portrait Project} Runaway Pudding

Hi everyone! This self-portrait was sort of my Christmas themed one (changed my idea a few times). For Christmas 2011, I dressed up as a pudding for my friend's party. It was full of stuffing and it tempted all of my friends to continually chase and tackle me. This inspired the shot of the pudding chase where I envisioned myself being chased by a mob of hungry Johns because I looked pretty tasty.

The photo was taken with my camera mounted on a tripod and pre-focused. I took several shots of myself in different positions and outfits. I then merged all the photos in photoshop to get the final image.

{Self-Portrait Project} Snorting Coke... Coca-Cola

Hi everyone! I saw a photo by Wesche Photography where he was pouring red wine into his mouth and I was inspired to do the same thing. I like his idea and you can check out his version by clicking here. As you can see, it was a big fail for me but it was so funny trying to do this. I completely missed my mouth and the coke poured into my nose. I had the weirdest fizzy sensation in my nose.

This shot was taken with my camera lying down on the ground with a flash mounted on top of the camera. I had the remote cable in my hand and I was taking the photo at 8 frames per second so I could pick the best shot later.

Hi everyone! I've seen so many photos like this where a person has a gun and shoots themselves in the head with something coming out on the other end. So this is my take on that concept.

The shot was taken with myself lying down on a white crinkled backdrop with party streamers lined up on the floor. The photo was taken with my camera and flash mounted on a monopod facing down. I used a remote cable to trigger the camera.

{Self-Portrait Project} A silhouette against the sunset

Hi everyone! Today I thought I would do a silhouette with the a77 and the 70-400mm lens. I love this combo and I shoot with it quite a lot now even though its quite heavy.

The photo was taken with Marione helping me with the lighting and angle of the photo and after that we mounted the tripod to set up the shot. The camera was pre-focused and metered to get the silhouette effect. The camera was on a self-timer for 10sec. Enough time for me to get ready in the shot.

{Self-Portrait Project} Just Cruising

Hi everyone! Today I thought I would try another experiment but this time with my cousin's camera mount suction cup (thanks cuz!). I always wanted to do something like this but I was a bit scared because I was afraid the camera would fall and break and its actually on loan so I was even more afraid. I wanted to capture the light streams of the street lights with me in the car. I couldn't do this properly because I was using a NEX-C3 and I couldn't trigger my flashes but it worked well enough. I'll do this again when I have my own rig that can support my a77.

The shot was achieved with the NEX-C3 on a suction cup with a camera mount on top. The flash was also attached to the camera. I took a number of test shots and ended up using shutter priority. The camera was set on a 10sec timer and I quickly rushed to my car and started driving.

Hi everyone! This photo was more of an experiment and to see how I would look. The powder turned out great but unfortunately my face didn't and that's how it was for a few photos. I just couldn't change my facial expression lol. It was a fun but messy photo in the studio.

I took this photo with my camera set on a tripod with it pre-focused on myself. The camera was on a 10sec timer and I had to time my jumps to catch myself in mid air with the powder going everywhere. I also used two flashes off camera on my left and right.

{Self-Portrait Project} Cleaning my face a little too well

Hey everyone! Whilst driving today, Marione and I were talking about what would happen if I was wiping my face and my mole came off or if it was really just dirt on my face. We were joking and laughing about it and I thought I would do it as a self-portrait. For those of you who don't know, I have a mole on the left side of my face. You can check out my other photos so you know what it looks like but how do you think I look without the mole?

I took the photo with my camera setup on a tripod with a remote cable connected to it. I used three flashes for this shot. Two flashes were facing the backdrop to get the white background and the other was used to light my face. I had the remote cable in my other hand to trigger the camera.

{Self-Portrait Project} My Feminine Side

Hi everyone! As the title suggests, its my feminine side. You have to admit, we all have one, well the people that I know have one. With the help of Marione, she transformed me into a female version of myself which I shall call Johanna. This was quite awkward but hilariously funny at the same time and kudos to Marione for coming up with this idea and it definitely brought me out of my comfort zone which I initially wanted in my self portrait photos.

The photo was done with my camera set on a tripod connected to a remote cable to trigger the shot. This is two photos in one and merged together in photoshop. I shot the male version of myself first and then shaved and then got all prettied up for my feminine self and took another photo. Very awkward!

Hi everyone! So I've finally watched all the Harry Potter movies and I was thinking of going to the Harry Potter exhibition that is on at the powerhouse museum. So if I were to go there I thought flying on my filo broom would be my mode of transport.

I took this photo with my camera set on a tripod and pre-focused where I would be and set the camera on a 2 sec self-timer. I took quite a few photos just to get the timing right. Marione helped me with a bit of editing in photoshop with clarity and contrast and extending the broom.

Hi everyone! Have you ever thought about how much work you could get done if there were more than one of you? Or if you ever thought that you could do a Kage Bunshin (Naruto term). Personally, I think it would be awesome but in reference to work, the only copy of me actually doing something useful is the one in the orange shirt washing the dishes. So come to think of it, maybe I wouldn't get much work done =.P

I took five photos and merged them all in photoshop. The camera was on a tripod connected to a remote so I wouldn't move the camera at all. I did different poses and I was in different outfits to make each individual stand out more.

{Snapshots} Outpost Art from the Streets

Hi everyone!

Catch a train to Circular Quay and catch a ferry to Cockatoo Island and check out some crazy artworks at the Outpost. It's awesome and the travel there is worth it too, mainly because I hardly ever catch a ferry. There are so many artists showcasing their work from paintings and sculptures to movies and interactive activities. One of my favorite places on Cockatoo Island was this section of hanging t-shirts. It looked so cool and I liked the gallery of portraits that were displayed underneath. The whole place was so inspiring. If you haven't checked it out yet, you have until December 11th to go there and enjoy a massive artistic exhibition.

{Snapshots} Sculptures by the Sea

With Sculptures by the Sea finished for another year, I thought I would catch up with my month long absence of posting with a snapshots post. Sculptures by the Sea is an annual event in its 16th year that exhibits artist's work from Bondi to Tamarama. Its a free event and if you want to attend you'll have to wait till next year since its already finished so if you missed out on it, here are a few of my photos.

{Self-Portrait Project} You're Next

Hi everyone! In the spirit of Halloween I thought I would do a self-portrait that would fit with the occasion. I was sort of going for a Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) or one of those slasher film villain looks. I wanted to be holding a machete or a huge knife or even an axe to add more to the photo but I didn't have any and a small kitchen knife wouldn't do. Anyway, Happy Halloween!

I took this photo with my camera mounted on a tripod turned slightly turned on its side to get a bit of a tilt in the photo. I used two flashes with red gels on light stands behind me and the camera was triggered via a remote cable.

{Snapshots} Zombie Walk

Hi everyone!

It's been quite a while since I've done a snapshots post but today I'm bringing it back in a lead up to Halloween. From Hyde Park to Elizabeth street to Prince Alfred Park a swarm of zombies plagued the streets, stopped traffic, chased civilians and invaded a 7/11 store. Everyone was in great character, moaning and growling and it was one of the most funniest and the most unique walk I've ever did. Can't wait for the next one. Enjoy the pics!

{Self-Portrait Project} Night Drive

Hi everyone! I used to drive around a lot to the city and pretty much anywhere at night taking photos in different places or just hanging out with friends. I was more a nocturnal person compared to what I am now, getting up at four in the morning to take photos. I guess this photo is a tribute to my old nocturnal life.

I took this photo in my car with my camera set on a tripod in the driver's seat facing the back. I used two flashes, off-camera on light stands. One was outside next to the door I was facing and the other was at the back of the car. I used a remote cable to trigger the camera and flashes. I didn't actually take this self-portrait in the city. It is instead two photos in one, where the city background was taken a long time ago and I my self-portrait was taken today. I merged the photos together in photoshop to the best of my ability (my photoshop skills aren't that great) and this is the final result.

Hi everyone! Or shall I say hola! The past couple of days, the weather in Sydney has been great but unfortunately, I'm a bit sick so I actually haven't had the chance to go out that much so here is just a simple random self-portrait of myself with a very cheesey smile in the studio with one of those comic like speech bubbles. I have an idea to do something like this with speech bubbles later on but we'll see if that goes on ahead.

The photo was taken with my camera mounted on a tripod triggered with a remote cable. The speech bubble is on one of my light stands which I edited out in photoshop. I also used a simple bounce flash.

Hi everyone! This photo is dedicated to anyone that has had or knows anyone that has had to deal with a physiological disease or a mental health illness. Everyone reacts to it differently. Some may get angry, some may become depressed, some people carry the burden on their shoulders with a smile or others can deny and refuse to accept that there is a problem. I think my reaction if I ever had something like that is feel completely alone and lost in my thoughts. I recently lost a relative to cancer and though I miss her, I know she's in a better place.

RIP Lola

Also note that today is world mental health day where its main goal is to create awareness and educate people on mental health. It can affect anyone but it can be treated effectively because the support is there.

{Self-Portrait Project} Bowl diving

Hi everyone! I was at home deciding what kind of photo I should take for this week's self portrait but after much deliberation it was already night time so I couldn't do what I wanted. Make this a lesson to myself to always plan my shots ahead. I ended up thinking of what kind of shots I actually do like which are mainly fast action water shots. So I filled a bowl of water, poured some milk to get some color into it and plunged my head in.

I set it up on a couple of jars to get the level right, pre-focused the camera and had my remote cable ready to take the photo. I was using my external flash mounted on the camera as well. You can't actually see all of my right hand but I was holding the cable to trigger the shutter. I only took one shot because this made a huge mess after the splash and I got in a bit of trouble with all the water everywhere but it was worth it.

{Self-Portrait Project} Contemplation

Hi everyone! At least twice every week, I get up at four in the morning to take some landscape photos. It's a lot of fun to do and even better at the beaches. It's so peaceful and quiet that I get to think and enjoy the morning air whilst taking photos. I don't think I'd ever get sick of doing this.

This was a tough photo to take because I didn't have anyone to hold the tripod in case it got knocked over by the waves. My camera was set on a tripod with a graduated neutral density filter and a neutral density filter. I pre-focused and set a self timer for ten seconds and quickly ran to the rocks to do a pose. Time was against what I initially wanted to achieve in this photo because since the sun was rising, I had to increase my shutter speed to avoid overexposing the photo. I wanted a slower exposure to capture the motion of the waves so I'm not exactly happy with it and also because it was rushed but then again I'll be going to the beach again many times to redo it.

Hi everyone! I originally had a different idea planned for this shot but I had to change to a different idea because I needed more time to prepare the other shot and time was something that I was short on. I then went onto planning my other idea in the kitchen but my lens wasn't wide enough (I wish I kept my 17-50mm lens). So here I am in the kitchen checking up on something that I am baking.

My camera was set up on a tripod attached to a remote cable. There were two flashes used where one was in my oven with an orange gel and the other behind me, where both were triggered wirelessly. The shot is two photos in one where the first was just the kitchen background and the second was myself and then merged in photoshop.

{Self-Portrait Project} Smokey water

Hi everyone! This is my first post of a double self-portrait for this week since I missed the previous week. The name of this title says it all. I'm blowing what looks to be smoke out of my mouth. In fact, it is milk that I'm using to substitute for smoke and I must say it looks pretty cool. I got this idea from another photographer who did pretty much the same thing and I thought it was interesting to try out. All credits go to Patrick Taschler who originally did this. The photo was achieved by filling a fish tank with water. I set the camera on a tripod attached to a remote cable that I triggered and I had one flash used wirelessly to my right. I dunked my head in water with a mouth full of milk and I blew it out making the smokey effect. I also cleaned the image up in photoshop to get rid of some of the bubbles.

{Self-Portrait Project} Falling

Hi everyone! I'm going for something different in this week's self-portrait and after looking at some inspirational images and sites, I came up with this photo of me falling on my bed. These sort of photos are called levitation photography and they're pretty fun to do and set up. Don't be surprised if I do more photos like this in the future.

I took this photo with five shots merged together in photoshop. The first was just the background. The second was of me on a chair lying down on top. The third and fourth was of my two pillows and the fifth shot was a shot of a random running shoe. The camera was set up on a tripod with a remote cable to trigger and set on a two second delay. I was using an off camera flash with an orange gel attached sitting on one of my stands.

Hi everyone! I did a photo shoot with one of my good friends not too long ago for his business. He is a great personal trainer who strives to get you the best results. {Self-Portrait Project} Picasso face

Hi everyone! Today I wanted to do another close up photo but to make it different I took a couple of photos and printed it out to hold against my face. It is slightly Picasso inspired but in a photographic way.

I took a couple of photos beforehand and used a polaroid printer to print out the photos that I was holding. The camera was prefocused and set on self timer with Marione directing me on where to hold the photos. This small shoot was pretty fun because of all the weird faces and expressions that we came up.

{CameraGear} Sony announce the long awaited a77 and a bunch of new products and accessories

Sony NEX and Alpha range

Hi everyone!

What a day! Sony announced a plethora of cameras and accessories for the A-mount and E-mount systems. There were a total of four cameras announced today, the a77 and a65 for the A-mount and the NEX-5N (NEX-5 replacement) and the NEX-7. Let's not forget, the NEX-VG20 which is a camcorder style video camera was also announced too. Since Sony announced a lot of products today, this is going to be a long post but I'll begin with the a77.

Sony a77 with Carl Zeiss 85mm 1.4 lens attached

The a77 is Sony's much anticipated successor to the a700 that was discontinued a couple of years ago. It takes the crown as being the world's fastest camera with an APS-C sized sensor that shoots at 12 frames per second at full resolution, that is at 24.3 megapixels. The camera is mainly aimed at both professionals and enthusiasts as well as videographers. I won't repeat all the specs of this camera as I'm sure many readers have already done so from other sites but if you haven't click here for the specs with the press release. I'll instead write a little about using this camera from my short time with it.

- The camera is lighter than I originally expected and very well built.
- The magnesium alloy body and weather sealing make this camera great for shooting in a variety of environments.
- It is very quick and responsive
- The XGA OLED viewfinder is a major upgrade compared to the a55. The EVF provides a sharper and more accurate picture of the scene which is great because what you see in the viewfinder is essentially exactly what you are going to get. The camera settings are perfectly laid out in my opinion and though the viewfinder doesn't perform as well as the a900 and a850's OVF it is still the best EVF on the market.

- Lastly, the articulated screen allows for a more easier way of composing your shot. The screen can be tilted up and down for self portraits and can twist and turn all in line with the lens axis. I personally like how Sony implemented the three way articulating screen, because the LCD turning out from the side throws the camera a bit off balance and I much prefer the LCD turned in line with the lens axis.

Sony a77 with new kit lens 16-50mm 2.8 SSM

A new kit lens was also announced with the a77, that is the 16-50mm 2.8 SuperSonicMotor (SSM) lens. This lens is the first lens to be advertised as weather sealed and with SSM and a constant 2.8 aperture, this is quite amazing for a kit lens.

Sony a65 with 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 lens

The Sony a65 announced along with the a77 is a camera aimed towards enthusiast and family class photographers who want high level performance in a light and compact body. This camera sits between the a77 and the a55 in Sony's line of Alpha cameras. I didn't play around with this camera as I was mainly using up my time with the a77 but with the short time I got to play around with it I can say that the build quality is better than the a55 and it feels a lot nicer in the hand. Sony a65 with kit lens 18-55mm 3.5-5.6

NEX-7 with 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 lens

Now we move on to a new class of NEX cameras, the NEX-7. This camera is aimed towards enthusiast photographers that don't want the bulk of carrying around a DSLR/DSLT sized camera. Its headline features include a 24.3 megapixel sensor, world's fastest shutter release time, built in XGA OLED viewfinder (same as the a77) and a customisable and intuitive interface. It has a built in flash and a hot shoe for Alpha flashes which is great news. Now I didn't get to play with this camera as it was in a glass case and I was told it was the only one in Australia so I can't really comment on how it handles but i must say it looks like a great camera and with the Carl Zeiss 24mm 1.8 lens it will surely be a great combo. Seeing as this was not as the Sony presentation I can't really say much about it but the headline features include a 16.1 megapixel sensor, AVCHD full HD video with 50p and 24p, improved ergonomics and handling as well as a touch screen which are all welcome additions over its predecessor, the NEX-VG10. Hi everyone! Today I did a quick shoot of myself at the Rocks in one of the phone booths. I was trying to make myself look like I was in a movie or something so I actually dressed up for it. I suck at making names for my photos so I titled this shot, phone call.

This shot was taken from outside the phone booth with my camera mounted on a monopod (can't find the base plate for my tripod at the moment). The camera was triggered via remote cable by my other hand which you can't see. I had to manually focus this and though its not completely sharp, I like how it has a slight out of focus look. No flashes were used and it was ambient light.

Sony Alpha Rumors has got product shots of the upcoming Sony a77 and its design looks impressive. After all the previous leaks of specs, pictures and even a video, a lot of hype has built up over this camera and the overall impression of this camera is very positive. Many people like myself are anxiously waiting for the official announcement of the a77 which is only 2 more days away at the time of this post and I'm sure many people can forgive Sony for taking so long for the a700 replacement to arrive.

In the lead up to Sony's major camera announcement on August 24th, the electronics manufacturer has announced a new category in the line of high end binoculars. Sony introduced two products in this category that have HD video recording, zoom, autofocus and steadyshot image stabilization which is a world's first. The binoculars can record video in AVCHD at 1080p in 2D and 3D as well as shooting still images at 7.1 megapixels and are also equipped with dual lenses which feature Sony's high end G series glass.

The DEV-5 is the more expensive of the duo with extra features such as 10x digital zoom, GPS, extra accessories (carrying case, large eye cup, lens cover, finder strap). The following chart is from Sony's press release detailing the differences between the DEV-5 and DEV-3.

In my opinion, if you can live without the extra accessories, GPS and digital zoom, then the DEV-3 is the way to go in terms of pricing. The DEV-3 is set to be priced at $1,399US which is $600 less than the DEV-5 at $1,999US.

Sony designed these binoculars with bird, wildlife and sporting watchers in mind. There probably won't be too much of a market for this product compared to their other products like the Alpha cameras but even though I don't need this, I sort of feel like I want one for the sake of it. It looks pretty awesome and kudos to Sony on the design and features of these new products.

Hi everyone!

I took part in an annual race called the City 2 Surf. It is the largest fun run in the world and has a record of over 85,000 participants this year. It was a cold and cloudy day with some rain but luckily it had stopped before the run commenced. This year I decided to not run for a personal best time but run with my camera again to take some snapshots of the event. It was a bit of a hassle but I love taking photos at these events so I had to take it with me. I made the camera as light as possible so I took the vertical grip off and shot with my nifty 50mm lens. Enough of me talking, here are a few of the shots from the race. Enjoy!

Hi everyone! This is a quick photo of me on my desk since I've been out all day and haven't had much time to do my original plan for today's self portrait. Its just me on my laptop looking up on any updates of the soon to be released a77 from Sony which should be a killer camera, more camera gear and various other photo topics on the web (its a daily routine and I love it). I love photography and camera gear so much that I had to get a camera sticker on my laptop too!

The photo was taken in the studio with a flash behind the laptop to add extra light, since the light from the laptop wasn't enough to illuminate my face. I could have used a longer shutter speed or increased the ISO but I wanted the photo to be blur and noise free. Camera was triggered via remote cable and for some reason I forgot that my little toy (Domo-Kun) was left on the table.

Hi everyone! After a failed self portrait session at the bay run, Marione and I decided to go to Broadway to try one of my other ideas that I had in mind for this week's photo. That photo didn't turn out as well as I planned it so we decided to give that another go some other week. We thought of a completely new idea whilst we were eating. Not many people like to be photographed while they're eating their food and that also applies to me. This is the facial expression that you would see if you took a photo of me while I'm eating.

The photo was taken outside the store with Marione guarding the tripod and camera. The camera was triggered by a wireless remote with a two second timer and when it was triggered, I quickly put the remote down and grabbed the food and got prepared for the shot.

Hi everyone! Reflecting on the week that just passed, I noticed that I spent a lot of my time in the kitchen cooking and eating. It was an unhealthy week but we all go through those times once in a while. This photo is to represent myself stuck in that unhealthy week in the kitchen. I guess it would have made more sense if I had junk food in this photo to get my message across but I didn't have any left.

The photo was taken with my camera and flash mounted on a tripod and triggered with a 10sec timer. I took two photos and made it into one and with the help of photoshop, I edited it with layers and made some small tweaks to the final image.

To comment on the images, I think I’m going to miss the on/off steadyshot switch that I have on my a350 and I’m curious as to why there is a ? button on a camera of this class. The vertical grip looks a bit large but I’ll save my final judgement to when I actually get my hands on the camera. Everything else looks great. The rumored specs look amazing and it looks like my a350 will be retiring very soon.

{Self-Portrait Project} Face Painting

Hi everyone! This image was inspired by another photographer, who's name I'm guessing is Victor Wagner. I thought it was pretty cool and creative shot so I decided to see if I could do something similar. To add meaning to this photo, this project has been challenging and has influenced a new creative vision and therefore painting a whole new perspective of photography.

The photo was taken in the studio with my orbis ring flash held just above and in front of me by Marione. The camera was triggered via my remote and the lens I was using was my 50mm lens. The photo was converted to black and white through photoshop and Marione did a lot of other editing which I will never understand. I did add some vignette in the photo for more effect. Thank you Marione for helping me with this shot.

{Self-Portrait Project} "Don't step on me!"

Hi everyone! I had little time to plan for this shot since I've been so busy lately but luckily it turned out alright with a simple setup and a simple concept. The only problem that I encountered whilst doing this photo was that it was freezing cold. This is pretty much another attempt of me trying to step out of my comfort zone with another weird facial expression (I was supposed to look scared that I was about to get squashed by a huge foot but when I looked closer I looked a bit happy about it).

I took this shot with self timer and the flash was on the floor a couple of meters away from the camera using wireless flash. Marione's shoe was used to create the shadow and the flash was pointed at a certain angle and distance away from the wall to get the shadow large enough to make it look like it was about to step on me. Initially I was supposed to get a shadow of a hand in this shot but Marione's hand is so small and her fingers would disappear since they're so thin so we chose to use her foot.

Hi everyone! I'm not really a violent person but I thought I should start stepping out of my comfort zone to make this project even better. I recently watched the Karate Kid and this is my tribute to the movie. Thank you Mr Miyagi, you taught me so much about how to fight.

I took this shot with my camera mounted on a tripod, triggered by a two second timer via remote. I used my small trampoline that I set up in the studio to help me get the air time I needed for the shot. I used three flashes where one was on my right and two were on my left (one pointed towards the backdrop and the other pointed in line with my body).

Hi everyone!

Recently I had the chance to go to an event hosted by Sony to try out some new and upcoming products before they hit the stores. I had the chance to also discuss some other upcoming products and give some feedback on what I thought about the direction of Sony, in particularly their NEX and Alpha lineup. After talking to the tech people who were very informative and helpful with my questions I can say that the second half of this year is going to be very exciting for photo enthusiasts.

After trying the NEX-C3, it is a great update to the predecessor, the NEX-3 with a better grip and better performance. I quite like seeing the alpha logo when turning off the camera but that's me. Unfortunately the 30mm f3.5 macro lens was not available at the time but I did get the opportunity to try out the new flash for the NEX system, the HVL-F20S which provides a stronger flash output than the flash supplied with the NEX 3 and NEX 5, has the ability to bounce flash for shadowless portraits and has an built-in diffuser.

The newly announced a35 was available at this event and it replaces the a33 camera that was available last year. This camera is a modest update to its predecessor and noticeably comes with a fixed LCD screen instead of a tilting screen on the a33. The camera feels the same than its predecessor, I'm guessing its made out of the same material. A new mode called tele-zoom high speed shooting is a new feature on this camera where the camera captures 7fps at a cropped resolution. The introduction of filters also makes it debut on this alpha camera as well as the NEX series where you can apply filters such as retro, high key, selective color and more to your stills or videos. You also have the ability to apply more than one filter which is pretty cool.

The CLM-V55 which is an external monitor mainly for video was also on display which was great to see because I'm actually considering buying this along with the a77 when its announced. I understand a bit more of what it can do and how to use it since it was attached to the a35 on the VCT-55LH bracket. I also tried out some other lenses that were available to try out such as the 70-400mm f4-5.6 G series lens (most likely my next lens purchase) and the Carl Zeiss 135mm f1.8 (exceptionally sharp and well made lens).

I'm very excited to see what Sony brings out in the second half of this year. The replacement for the a55 and NEX-5 are expected as well as the a77 and NEX-7 (not sure about the name) and a bunch of new lenses and accessories. Thank you Sony for hosting this great and informative event.

Hi everyone! This is what it looks like when I am planning my photography shoots and projects. Often at times its late into the night so the only light source comes from my lamp and my monitor (I don't like using my room light because it uses to much electricity). I look through books and magazines to draw some inspiration and use my notebook to write down any ideas.

For those that don't know, I'm a gear head when it comes to cameras and lenses and anything photography related. I don't usually post up rumors but I'm just really excited to upgrade to this camera. The image above is the first ever photo of the long awaited a700 replacement, the a77 and the replacement for the a55, the a65. A big thanks to Andrea from Sony Alpha Rumors for getting this pic. The following are some possible specs also taken from the site.

The new articulated LCD screens on the back of the cameras look interesting and I'm curious to see how they work.

Hi everyone! I'm actually starting to train for a fun run in August called the City 2 Surf which is the world's largest running event held in Sydney. After a short training session, I had the chance to take a photo of something that I wanted to do for a while and finally I had the chance to do this today.

Three flashes were used to get this look. There was one directly behind me on a stand, a flash behind me to my left a bit high up facing towards me and one more flash on the floor to my right facing up at my body (I forgot to bring another stand for this flash). The camera was set up on a tripod, pre-focused and was triggered using a remote control. Thanks to Marione for helping me with the focusing since it was really dark. The flashes were triggered through the pop-up flash on my camera. It took over fifty shots to get the right photo with the right lighting and it was freezing while doing this since I was squirting myself with water but it was worth it in the end.

Hi everyone! Today I was at an annual event called Supanova. For those that don't know, Supanova is an event where people gather to check out anything game, anime, manga, sci-fi, movie and fantasy related. People dress up in their favorite characters, shop around for costumes and other cool toys, play video games, watch the shows and more. Guests even get to meet and interact with a few stars such as Tom Felton who plays Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies and James Marsters who was in Buffy and Smallville. Its a great social event and from all the costumes I've seen, it makes me want to dress up for next year. Right now, here are a few snapshots of the festival that I took. By the way, I don't even know who half of these characters are but they look pretty cool! Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

The third annual Vivid Sydney festival has finished for another year. It hasn't failed in entertaining the people that ventured out into the cold and sometimes rainy nights to visit the light shows and live music that this event had to offer. With every show there is always a stand out feature that amazes me and I'm sure many other people. The first year it was the Sydney Opera House, last year it was St Mary's Cathedral and this year it was Customs House. I made a short time lapse of customs house that you will be able to view at the end of the post. Hi everyone! Today I thought I would show you a different perspective on what it looks like when you open the fridge. At the moment my fridge doesn't have that much in it since I ate all the food but luckily I still have one more can of mountain dew. I've started trying out these flavors and although this particular flavor isn't my favorite it still tastes alright. My favorite flavor at the moment though, is 'Voltage' which is available at a store called 'Sugar Fix' if you're in Sydney.

This shot took a few goes because I wanted the can to be in focus and myself to be partly blurred out. Its not my best photo because of my weird facial expression. That must be what I look like when I open the fridge door =.P

Hi everyone!

On the 8th of June 2011, Sony announced two new entry level cameras to their NEX and Digital Single Lens Translucent (DSLT) lineup, the a35 and NEX-C3.

The Sony a35 replaces the a33 that was announced last year and is the second generation of cameras from Sony to incorporate a translucent mirror. The following are a few upgrades to this camera from its predecssor:
- improved sensor (16.2 megapixels from 14.2megapixels)
- new feature tele-zoom high speed shooting at 7fps
- new feature picture effects for stills and HD video
- camera battery consumption is redefined for longer shooting
- slightly lighter

Sony a35 with 18-55mm lens attached

This camera does not have a tilt screen like the a33 but it does cut the cost down for a more affordable price for people wanting to step up from their compact cameras. However, the a35 does retrain all its other features from its predecessor such as sweep panorama (2D and 3D), HDR, Hand-Held twilight, continuous autofocus on stills and video and more. Its a modest update to the a33 and with its new features added to this model, it is sure to be a great, stand-out camera for its class.

The NEX-C3 replaces its predecessor, the NEX-3 that was released last year. The C in the name stands for compact and as of the time of this posting, it is the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens camera with an APS-C sized sensor.

The NEX-C3 retains all of its stand out features but adds the picture effects and a special mode called peaking which assists in manual focus. Battery life is also more efficient and is able to shoot at about 400 shots per charge.

30mm f3.5 Macro Lens for E-Mount

Sony also released a couple of accessories, one of them the 30mm f3.5 macro lens for the E-mount system. This lens offers the chance to take real life macro images with a magnification ratio of 1:1. It also offers smooth and silent auto-focus and gives a minimum working distance of 2.4cm. This lens is also supplied with a lens hood.

HVL-F20S Flash

Lastly, the HVL-F20S flash for the NEX system was announced to boost the number of accessories available. This flash clips onto the accessory terminal on top of any NEX camera and offers a guide number of 20 as opposed to the supplied flash with a guide number of 7. The flash can also bounce and zoom for different effects with your photos. This flash does not require any batteries.

A firmware update was also announced for the a33 and a55 cameras to enable the following:

Addition of the Picture Effect function (7 Effects, 11 Variations)
Programmability of the D-RANGE button (on the top panel) to access 14 functions (Drive Mode, Flash Mode, Auto Focus Mode, AF area, Face Detection, Smile Shutter, ISO, Metering Mode, Flash EV Comp, White Balance, DRO/Auto HDR, Creative Style, SCN/Picture Effect, Sweep Shooting)
Addition of a new mode to turn off display parameters
Improved operability of the Menu (the ability to return to last selected item instead of menu top)
Enable High-Speed Sync when using compatible external flash wirelessly (only α55 – α33 already has this feature)
Addition of Digital level gauge display (on the HDMI output) when using the optional external monitor (like CLM-V55 LCD Monitor)

A firmware update was also announced for the NEX-3 and NEX-5 to enable the following:

Addition of the Picture Effects function (7 Effects, 11 Variations)
Addition of the Manual Focus Peaking function
Very minor – when turning off the camera, the “α” logo will be displayed on the LCD

For those of you who don't know what this is, its a festival of music and lights that is held every year for about three weeks and is now in its third year. This unique event is now the largest light festival in the southern hemisphere. If you can brace the cold and you're willing to come out, you will find that this event was well worth the trip.

Hi everyone! I titled this photo 'waiting' because I am currently waiting for better things to come. This doesn't apply to everything but with a few things, its important to wait. So while I'm waiting, I'm having a hot beverage to keep me warm during these winter nights.

I needed some assistance with this shot and lucky Marione was there to help me with this one. The camera was prefocused and shot with a 10 second self-timer for me to get in position. Marione was there to assist me with how to take the photo and to guard the camera while it was set on the tripod.

I decided to have a little shoot with my dad in his bat cave which is actually the garage. He spends his time playing the guitar here nearly everyday after he comes home from work. I was going for a natural look with no posing here so you get a glimpse of how he is in his environment. I converted this to black and white to create some mood and I used two flashes off camera. One was set up to my right just behind him to create the shadowing and to give it some emotion. The second was to my left just in front of him set at a low power. The only thing I don't like in this photo is the beer bottle on the bottom left corner (just goes to show that I need to be more aware of the placement of objects in a photo).

This is also my submission in a photo contest conducted by Digital Camera Warehouse and Canon. Let's hope I'm one of the finalists.

Hi everyone! Being a curious person with photography, I often find myself looking at other photographer's photo shoots and wonder, what setup did they use and how did come up with those ideas. I always get inspiration from those type of photographers that are willing to share their experiences and ideas. The ones that inspire me the most are Chase Jarvis, Brian Smith, Joe McNally and Dom Bower (just to name a few) who have taught me and many other photographers different but valuable lessons.

Since it was a rainy day, I had to change my original idea of an outdoor shoot and do a shoot in the studio. Here is the following setup:

This place was okay for a cafe. To be honest the ambiance wasn't that great and it was really quiet because they had no background music playing and it wasn't too busy. I just didn't feel too comfortable here compared to when I'm at Max Brennar.

The food was below average. The pancakes were burnt at the bottom and it tasted really salty for some reason. The fondue was good but the Chocolate Room ran out of strawberries and this was early during the day so I was a bit surprised about that and really unfortunate because I love strawberries with chocolate.

Overall, this place didn't live up to the expectations that I initially had for it. The food was disappointing, the atmosphere was dead and the lighting didn't make the place feel like a nice and cozy place to enjoy your food. The best thing about the Chocolate Room was the Twixie milkshake.

Hi everyone! This is my new project, the self-portrait project. It's time for me to be in front of the camera, so you're going to see me a lot from now on. I'll be doing one every week on Monday for a year starting from today. The photo above was inspired by a Kanye West song, titled 'Street Lights'. People may interpret this song differently but I see it as a journey of experiences and obstacles that I face on the way to a certain destination in my life. I like this song because I feel like I can relate to it in my current situation. I want to be a professional photographer but I haven't reached that place in my life yet, although others are pushing me into different directions, I know I'll become a professional photographer someday.

Hello everyone!

I'm a big fan of sushi trains and the wide selection of food they have to offer. I've been going to Sushi Hotaru which is at the Galleries Victoria quite a lot since it opened, usually after I visit Books of Kinokuniya upstairs. With the exception of only a few of their plates, all the sushi is $3 (not a bad price considering the other sushi trains I've been to).

When you enter this sushi train, you're greeted by all the staff which is pretty nice. The atmosphere isn't too bad and the sushi is pretty decent as well. If the food that you're looking for isn't on the conveyer belt, you can make a special order to one of the staff and they’ll make it for you. Doesn’t take that long to make it either.

If you want a wide selection of great sushi at a good price, you'll want to visit this place. Their customer service is pretty good (compared to some other sushi trains that I’ve been to) and they’re in a convenient location in the city.

Hello everyone!

This is my first of many upcoming posts about places that I eat at amongst the other various things that I blog about such as photography in general, snapshots of events, photo shoots and a few other ideas that I have in mind. Being the first, I thought I'd mention a very popular place in Rozelle, Adriano Zumbo Patissier. If you've been here before, you would notice the awesome graffiti on the wall outside. It's a small place with limited seating but that isn't really a problem. The service is great, the food is well decorated and you even get to see the staff prepare the food through the glass windows. It's cool to watch if people decide to sit there.

Angela Quiche

They have a range of cakes, tarts, pastry, loaves and quiche. I enjoyed their food and after going there a few times, I liked it even more. The cakes I tried tasted great and they were beautifully decorated.

Hot Chocolate

The thing that this place is most famous for is their macarons. Its the best I've ever had and with a changing flavor menu every month, you won't ever get sick of what they have to offer.

The blue macaron (smarties) was the best of the lot.

All in all, I think this place is well worth the travel if you have a craving for some macarons. It's not really a place for lounging about like Gloria Jeans and Starbucks but more of a walk in walk out sort of place. I did find it pretty cool that we could check out the chefs decorating and preparing the food. It may be a bit pricey for some but with all the prep that goes into it, I understand why its like this. This place gets my recommended rating of 3/5

Sony announces new HVL-F43AM flash and more accessories

Today, Sony announced a new mid-level flash for Alpha users, the HVL-F43AM. It succeeds the previous model HVL-F42AM unit and offers the innovative 'Quick Shift Bounce' that was only reserved for the higher end HVL-F58AM model. It has a slightly stronger flash output with a guide number of 43 and has a new menu and layout design, similar to the higher end flash. In addition to this, the flash also offers wireless ratio control which makes it easier to control other flash units (3 maximum). It also features a dust and moisture resistant design which makes it suitable for shooting outdoors and indoors.

In addition to the new flash, Sony also announced the following products for the Alpha system.

A wine glass full of red cordial. This was so fun to shoot and so messy at the same time. I did this in the studio and with a pillow covered in plastic to protect it from the liquid and more plastic all over the floor. Flicking the wine glass and getting it right in the frame was a challenge since I was doing this by myself but after so many tries I got it right. I love this shot.

Simple and fun shot of high speed off camera flash. I had one flash on the left and one on the right and I poured some powder on my desk. Then I bounced a tennis ball and used my remote trigger to take the photo.

I used my macro lens to take this shot. Poured soda water into a glass container for the bubbles and cut a piece of lemon to take this photo. The detail of the lemon and the bubbles are so sharp.

Hi everyone.

I don't usually post up announcements on video cameras but since this is using the E mount (the same as the Sony NEX 3 & NEX 5 cameras), I thought that I would blog about this. It's basically a video camera with interchangeable lenses with more advanced controls and flexibility than a DSLR with video. The camera has an EXMOR super 35mm CMOS sensor which is pretty much the same size sensor found in APS-C cameras and is capable of recording up to 1920x1080 60p at 28Mbps with a number of other frame rates available.

Now I don't understand much about video cameras but if I were serious about videography, I would definitely consider this an option as I would be able to use my current lens lineup on this camera via a lens adapter.
